Study Smart Start & Becoming A Master Student Course

Study Skills programmes

  • University and College Prep Course (grade 11 and 12)
  • High School Prep Course & Intermediate Study Skills (grades 7, 8 and 9)

Whether it is at the junior, intermediate or senior levels, improving study skills could be the key to significantly improved academic performance. Teachers at all levels have often communicated that many students fail to do well because of poor learning skills. Many students are ill prepared for entering grade 9 and/or college and university. Students' priorities tend to relate more to making a smooth social transition; however, students who are better equipped to efficiently study and manage their time, set goals and communicate well in writing, have more time to devote to working on other aspects of school life! This course helps prepare students for this transition.

These courses are designed for students who could achieve higher academic excellence if they learned efficient, active study strategies. Taking one of these study skill courses does not mean the student is necessarily having difficulties at school, but rather he/she could become more effective at studying and individual goal setting. Indeed, many average to above average students attend these courses in order to achieve a level more keeping with their potential. Our aim is to show the students how to balance both social and academic aspects of their lives and how to have the time to pursue the activities they really enjoy.

Courses include the following:

  • Time management/organizational skills
  • Application of student's learning style to note-taking and study strategies
  • Fostering responsibility, consistency and independence in approaching studying and school assignments
  • Memory enhancing strategies
  • Opportunity to bring in course material to apply these various techniques in a practical way
  • Test anxiety & stress management techniques
  • Goal setting
  • Learning style identification so the student gains a better understanding of how he/she learns best
  • Efficient and effective study methods (chapter maps, flow charts, file cards)
  • Active reading strategies
  • Test and exam taking skills

One-on-one or small group workshops (3-5 students) emphasize time management for homework, long-term assignments and studying, learning techniques for review and study, note taking skills and attitudinal factors affecting performance at school. Students attend 2 days per week for 2-hour sessions each day for 2 weeks. This programme also runs on an individual basis.
