Grade 10 Literacy Test Preparation Course the "OSSLT"
This programme is geared to students entering grade 10 in the fall and who must write the OSSLT ("Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test") to receive high school diploma. Focus in this course will be on helping students to develop strategies they can use specifically for the OSSLT. This course is not intended to improve basic reading and writing skills. It is designed to expose them to OSSLT expectations and to strategies that they can use while taking the test. This course is offered individually but can also be delivered to small groups. Space is limited, so register early!
Reading
The reading component of this course helps students prepare for the three essential reading skills that they must demonstrate on the test:
- Understanding ideas and information stated directly in the reading selection.
- Understanding indirectly stated ideas and information.
- Making connections between personal knowledge and experiences and the ideas and information in the reading selection (www.eqao.com)
Students will be exposed to the three types of reading selections on the OSSLT:
- Information (e.g., explanations, instructions)
- Graphic (e.g., schedules, graphs, tables)
- Literary (e.g., stories, descriptions, dialogues) www.eqao.com
Writing
The writing component of this course helps students prepare for the four writing tasks that they will face on the test: a summary, a series of paragraphs expressing an opinion, a news report and an information paragraph.
Students are required to demonstrate the following six skills in all four pieces of writing:
- Developing a main idea
- Providing supporting details
- Organizing and linking ideas and information
- Using correct grammar and punctuation
- Using correct spelling (www.eqao.com)
